Sediment Recycling and the Evolution of Analog Orogenic Wedges

چکیده

In convergent systems, the interplay between tectonics, erosion, and sedimentation controls orogenic evolution. The nature of interactions these factors is still elusive due to complex feedbacks that operate across different temporal spatial scales. Here, we investigate with analog models landscape evolution designed account for both tectonic forcing surface processes, using a water-saturated granular material allows simulate contemporary brittle deformation processes. imposed by movement rigid backstop, processes are triggered simulated rainfall runoff. We vary convergence velocity, rate, basal angle box, testing how boundary conditions affect balance tectonics measure competition input fluxes (tectonics) output (erosion) material, showing strongly affects fluxes. results suggest experimental equilibrium erosion can be achieved, in models, only low rates (about 10 mm hr?1) and/or high (>2°, limited sedimentation). If foreland overfilled sediments if velocity higher, channels decrease their erosional efficiency, moving dynamic toward former.

Constraints from Thorium/Lanthanum on Sediment Recycling at Subduction Zones and the Evolution of the Continents

Arc magmas and the continental crust share many chemical features, but a major question remains as to whether these features are created by subduction or are recycled from subducting sediment. This question is explored here using Th/La, which is low in oceanic basalts (<0 2), elevated in the continents (>0 25) and varies in arc basalts and marine sediments (0 09–0 34). Volcanic arcs form linear...

Worms as wedges: Effects of sediment mechanics on burrowing behavior

Recent studies document linear elastic response of muddy marine sediments to load and deformation on temporal and spatial scales relevant to animal movement, with burrowers making openings for movement in such sediments by fracture. Cracks propagate through linear elastic solids in mode I (opening-mode crack growth) when the stress intensity factor (KI) at the crack tip exceeds the material’s f...

Changes of bedload characteristics along the Marsyandi River (central Nepal): Implications for understanding hillslope sediment supply, sediment load evolution along fluvial networks, and denudation in active orogenic belts

Understanding and quantifying fluvial transport and bedrock abrasion processes have become major concerns in modeling landform response to tectonic and climatic forcing. Recent theoretical and experimental investigations have in particular stressed the importance of sediment supply and size in controlling bedrock incision rate. Many studies on the downstream evolution of pebble size have focuse...
